PELICANS INJURED IN STORM
By: David Haggard of The Reelfoot Lake State Park
May 5th, 2006

The severe storm that hit the Dyersburg area last week not only affected local residents but also several unusual migratory birds. A flock of White Pelicans, who spend the winter in the gulf coast and migrate thru this area on the return to Canada were caught in the hail storm near Lennox. Lennox residents found the huge birds this morning walking around the neighborhood, and called Reelfoot Lake State Park for assistance.

The birds seemed stunned and one had a broken wing. Rangers David Haggard and Shane Morrow responded and caught 4 of the birds from around the houses. White Pelicans are one of the largest birds in North America and the largest found at Reelfoot Lake,, weighing over 16 lbs and a wingspan of over 9 feet.  Because of where they were, on the ground between houses and fences, and stressed from being beaten to the ground by the hail they were having a difficult time taking flight from the ground, they usually run across the water or level ground like an airplane taking flight.  The birds were transported to Reelfoot Lake, treated and released.
