Report for September 7th, 2001 The fishing has started to really pick up in the last week and barring some really warm weather, it just might have started a pattern that will last through the fall. Catfishing and Stripe fishing are excellent, while Bass and Crappie are not far behind. The fish aren't the only thing biting. Make sure and bring your mosquito dope with you. The skeeters have been even more fierce than normal. Another interesting development is the closing of the state boat ramps on Monday and Tuesday. All state boat ramps will be closed on these two days until further notice. That includes around 6-8 of the major ramps on the lake, so make sure and keep it in mind when heading out to your favorite ramp. It's not clear just how much money is being saved by closing the ramps. Doesn't make much sense, but it's happening none the less. We'll see if we can find out more in the weeks ahead. Here's the fishin stuff: Crappie - Crappie fishing picked up considerably. They have been caught in water that's anywhere from 4-10 feet deep and the mornings have been the best time. Minnows are the top bait (Minnows are almost always the top bait for Reelfoot crappie). Try bottom bouncing a double minnow rig or fishing a foot or two off the bottom. The fish being caught are also of decent size, averaging 1/2 to 3/4 lb. Stripes - The stripe fishing remains excellent. They are literally being caught anywhere. Whether it's the grassy shorelines, the sand bars or in the trees, somebody is catching em. Frozen pin minnows on a single hook with a split shot are working well. Also small spinners. In case you can't find these pin minnows, Bo's Landing has em. Don't know if anyone else does, but Bo's does. Bass - Bass fishing is still good. Spinnerbaits worked around the lily pads are a safe bet for some action. The best times are early and late in the day. Might try a buzzbait at daylight to provoke a few strikes. Catfish - Catfishing has picked up considerably and Reelfoot's favorite, Sonny's stinkbait, is the top bait. Nightcrawlers have taken a back seat this week, but will still bring in a few also. They have moved into the shallows and can be found around the trees in 2-3 feet of water. Bream (bluegill) - Bream fishing has moved from fair to somewhere between fair to good. Some good catches are being brought in and they have definitely picked up, but they aren't providing consistent action yet. Crickets are the bait of choice. Some anglers have been doing well up in the grass in 2-3 feet of water.
