Report for October 12th, 2001

Finally, a good rain comes to west Tennessee, and no place needed it more than Reelfoot. A few inches have already been deposited and more is in the forecast.

Reelfoot is still very low and these rains were needed to help provide more surface area and more prime spots for incoming waterfowl, as well as fresh oxygen for the fish. It should stimulate fish movement in the days ahead.

The wind and rain this week have kept many anglers off the lake. But, when they've got out there, they continue to do fairly well. Here's the rest:

Crappie - Crappie fishing is good. As stated earlier, the weather has limited the fishing, but there are some good catches being brought in. The crappie are schooling up for the most part and they are being caught by drifting slowly around stumps. Fish 2-6ft. deep in about 7ft. of water. Minnows are always the top bait.

Bass - Bass fishing is good. Try fishing white spinnerbaits in 3-6ft. of water. Also, when these rains stain the water a little, you might try a chartreuse or black spinnerbait. They seem to show up better under those conditions. Another method that works well this time of year is tossing a black spoon tipped with a split tail chartreuse grub or a chartreuse skirt. Toss the spoon up in the moss or run it on top of the lily pads for good success.

Catfish -Catfishing continues to be excellent. They are still being caught at a variety of depths, but shallow water is one of the best bets. Stinkbait has been producing best.

Stripes - The stripe fishing is fair. The Snow Bar area out from Bo's Landing has been producing a few. Frozen pin minnows are the top bait.

Bream (bluegill) - Bream fishing remains slow and slower. Try the Crappie, Catfish or Bass.
