Report for August 1st, 2001 Hot, Hot, Hot! That's all you can say, about the weather that is. Crappie and Bluegill are still slow. Bass fishing is fair early and late. The stripes and catfish are still biting well, but that's about it. The lake level is a foot and a half below normal pool, which is awful low, but not as low as we've seen it in the last couple of years. Not much of the report has changed, but here it is: Stripes - The stripe fishing is still doing well. The best areas have a sandy bottom and most of these are found on the south end between the spillway and Kirby's pocket. The area out from Bo's Landing is still one of the prime spots. Some good success can be had by fishing in 5-5 1/2 feet of water fishing 6-8 inches off the bottom. Try a single pin minnow with a #7 split shot fished under a bobber for good results. I should of made it clear in the previous report that these pin minnows are frozen. I can't explain why frozen works best, but trust me they do. To find the big schools, just look for them hitting the top of the water. They're really chasing the minnows and can be spotted pretty easily. The best times are early in the morning and late in the afternoon, but they will be hitting the surface on and off all day if you can stand the heat. Bass - Bass fishing is fair The best times are early and late and the top baits are buzzbaits, plastic worms in electric blue or shad color and spinnerbaits. Focus on the trees and stumps. Catfish - Catfishing is excellent. The best catches are coming from the deep water, but a few are being had along the grassy shorelines. One of the best areas is around Swan Basin. Find some deep water and some stumps or snags for the best fishing. Bream (bluegill) - Right now it's slow. A few can still be caught, but it is kind of hit and miss. Concentrate on shady spots around the trees in 1-3 feet of water and once again focus on early and late in the day. Crappie - Crappie fishing is still slow. A few are being caught on minnows or jigs tipped with minnows in the deeper water (12-15ft.).
