Report for March 22nd, 2001

Well, there's only one word to summarize the fishing conditions this week. WINDY! Windy conditions have dominated the fishing this week. High winds and even higher waves have kept most fishermen off the lake, especially the deep water where the crappie are holding right now.

If you can get out of the wind, the crappie are biting in anywhere from 6-18 foot of water. This is still a broad range of depths and finding which depth is working on a particular day is key. A few crappie are moving up shallow and being caught in Grooms Pocket and Swan Basin around stumps in 4-6 feet of water, but most are still in the deeper water(10-15 feet). Double minnow rigs are the bait of choice for most fisherman.

Here's some good information about crappie fishing from Ken Schultz: Fishing Editor for Field and Stream Magazine.

Some good largemouth in the 2-4 lb. class are being caught in shallow water, with white spinnerbaits, shallow running crankbaits and black and blue jigs working best. The bass fishing is providing some of the best action, because of the ability to fish some of the shallower areas out of the wind.

Catfishing has been slowed somewhat, but all they need is about 3 days in a row of 50+ degree days and they should turn back on. Sonny's stinkbait is the favorite catfish bait and it can be purchased at most area bait and tackle stores.

Bluegill - no reports this week.

The lake remains clear in the upper and lower basins and the water has risen about 4 inches since last week; still high for this time of year.

Remember when fishing Reelfoot that there are lots of stumps, so take your time in windy conditions and be careful out there. The water temperatures are still below 50 degrees, so it's no time for a swim. Always wear a life jacket when the motor is running.
