Report for April 13th, 2001 The water temps are in the mid sixties and the fishing is great right now. Bass and Crappie are at their peak. Bass are being caught in water 4 feet deep or shallower and the primary baits are shallow running crankbaits and spinnerbaits. The bass are really agressive, so cover lots of water. Fan casting in stump beds is producing lots of fish. It's also a good time to try rattling baits or buzzbaits. When they are really biting like this, the more noisy and disturbing lures work better. Areas to try are the Palestine stumps in Kirby Pocket, Grassy Bend, Starve Pond and many of the stumps out from Samburg. Jeremy went bass fishing yesterday and caught 25, with 18 being keeper size. The largest one was right at 5 pounds and all were released. Crappie are being caught in the shallows, but some are still holding around the 10-11 foot depth range and these deeper fish are maybe providing the best action. Minnows are the bait of choice for most anglers. Look for a sandy or hard bottom on your depth finder in this 10 foot range. Bluegill have really picked up in the north end. Lots of fish are being caught and the preferred baits are crickets and 1/64th ounce black jigs tipped with waxworms. Fish these about 18" below a bobber. Catfish are also picking up. Shad guts and Sonny's stinkbait fished in 3-4 feet of water is working well. Another catfishing tip: watch the commorants, they will usually give away the shad and a great catfishing spot. This weekend calls for colder weather, but what effect it will have is uncertain. It looks like it should have a minimal impact and good fishing should continue. Click
