Wood Duck and Teal Season
September 13th-17th, 2003

While many states have an early Teal Season, only three states (Tennessee, Kentucky and Florida) have a combination Teal/Wood Duck Season. It provides Tennessee hunters an early shot at these speedy little birds and it also provides a unique waterfowling experience.

As opposed to the big spreads used in winter waterfowl hunting, a half dozen decoys will suffice and even those aren't necessary if you're in the right spot. Calls can be used, but they're not a necessity either. Grab a can of OFF and some wasp spray if you're blind hunting and you're ready to go.

The magnum loads aren't needed either. 3 inch, 4 shot is plenty to bring down one of these little rascals and the extra pellets allow for a more open choke, which is often handy for some of the fast fly-bys.

They will work decoys. But, as often as not they just buzz by. It can be some fast and furious shooting, especially at opening bell on Reelfoot Lake. If you're anywhere around the lake opening day you'll likely hear a barrage that resembles as small war.

Reelfoot is one of the top spots anywhere for both Woodies and Teal. Wood ducks inhabit the area all year round. Add in the early migrations of teal and wood ducks and you've got a great hunt. Some of the early teal have already started to arrive and the season is still three weeks away.

You can freelance out on Reelfoot and just find an area they're using. However, a guide can be a great asset on this hunt. Most of them will have a much better spot than would be available otherwise.

This year's early season is 5 days long and will be held on September 13th-17th in 2003. Daily bag limit is 4 of which only two may be wood ducks.

Make sure and have all the licenses required. You can view license information...on this page
