TWRA Meeting

Here's a brief overview of the topics discussed at the recent meeting ( Spring 2001):

The introduction of wild Elk to Tennessee was hugely successful. All the elk transported to Tennessee were on transport trucks for over 90 hours and yet not one mortality. Usually the stress of such a journey is very hard on wild animals and a few deaths are the norm. This is a big accomplishment and the leaders of this project Greg Wathen and Larry Marcum were presented with bronzed elk statuettes and they were well deserved.
As stated by Greer Tidwell, Jr. of the Tennessee Conservation League "Bringing back elk to Tennessee, and the chance for our children and grandchildren to hear elk bugle will be remembered as one of the greatest conservation achievements of the new century".

The funding for the Reelfoot Lake Spillway project should be obtained by the Corps of Engineers in October of this year. We will have more on this subject in the following months.

Money for public dove fields has been increased. For more on this click here.

The TWRA sponsored television series Tennessee's Wildside has received funding for another year. In it's first season it had a 5-6 television rating, which is barely behind Tennessee Crossroads (the state's  top rated PBS program). Thirteen episodes will be funded and likely more.

$801,000 were allocated for the purchase of a tract of land in Dyer County intended for public hunting use. More on this story will be released this summer.

The TWRA has agreed to provide Ontario Canada with 200 Wild Turkey to help in their Turkey stocking program.
