2002 SPRING WILD TURKEY HUNTING SEASON SET
At its meeting in Nashville, on Dec. 7, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources
Commission set the wild turkey hunting season for the spring of 2002,
according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA).
Season dates for 2002 are March 30 through May 7.
To maintain the same length season each year, the season has been
established to begin on the Saturday nearest April 1 and continue for 39
days. The Youth-Only hunt day will be May 11.
The statewide bag limit for the 2002 season will remain the same as
last year. On statewide hunts, a hunter may take one bearded turkey per
day, not to exceed three for the season. On Wildlife Management Area (WMA)
hunts the limit will be one bearded bird per hunt, not to exceed two
birds for the season. However, the total limit for the season is still
four birds. This means if a hunter takes three birds during the
statewide season, the fourth turkey will need to be harvested from
certain Wildlife Management Areas (WMA's).
Turkeys taken on Ft. Campbell, Chickasaw National Wildlife Refuge, Lower
Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge, Reelfoot National Wildlife Refuge and
youth -only hunts are bonus birds and do not count toward the total
season bag and possession limits.
During the 2001 spring season, there were over 29,000 gobblers
harvested across the state. If good weather is experienced during the
2002 spring hunting season, the harvest could approach 30,000 birds or
more.
Hunting pamphlets, providing complete details about wild turkey
hunting, will be available by mid-February from hunting and fishing
license agents. The information will soon be listed on TWRA's web page
at: www.tnwildlife.org.
