SQUIRREL SEASON OPENS

It’s squirrel season and if you’re counting there are 184 days before the expiration on the last day of February 2011.

Each year the statewide season open on the fourth Saturday in August. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has set some permanent opening dates for a variety of seasons ranging from squirrel in late August to quail and rabbits in early November and archery deer in late September to regular gun deer season the Saturday before Thanksgiving.

Daily bag limit on squirrels remains at ten.

Lots of squirrels have been seen and there appears to be a good mast crop this year. Scaly bark hickories are abundant with nuts this year and squirrels have been cutting on them for weeks.

It’s a good time to introduce a youngster to the outdoors and share some time in the woods as the world of wildlife wakes up as dawn chases away the dark.
