reelfoot lake fishing report

Reelfoot Lake Fishing Report for:
September 5th, 2003

The recent rains have added much needed oxygen to Reelfoot Lake and it seems to have made a difference. Both Bass and Crappie fishing have been good lately. With the upcoming cooler weather, other species may follow. It may be a little pre-mature, but it looks like fall is near and that means some great fall fishing.

Lake levels have risen sharply and now are around 6 inches above pool. We don't have the exact water temps, should be in the low 80's. Look for water temps to fall with the next few days of mild weather. Here's the rest:

Crappie-Getting better all the time. More than a few catches of 30-40 were reported this week. They're still holding somewhere in the 8-14 foot range and minnows is still the top bait.

Bass-After picking up to fair last week, the bass fishing continues to get better and has been good this week. Got a report from one angler catching 35 one day this week, with a big 6 pounder mixed in there. He was catching them working the pads with a pumpkin seed tube.

Try buzzbaits fished just fast enough to keep em above water. Spoons and the aforementioned tubes should also work well. For buzzbait and spoon colors Jackie likes black on sunny days and brighter colors (silver, chartreuse, white) on cloudy days.

The bass are still a little spooky, so sneak around as much as possible on calm days.

Catfish-Fair, but could pick up with the cooler weather. Stinkbait, nightcrawlers and cut shad are the top baits, as always.

   Bluegill- Slow

Stripes- No news, but could see them pick up for a final run before fall.
