reelfoot lake fishing report

Reelfoot Lake Fishing Report for:
September 27th, 2002

Fishing is still improving on Reelfoot, and it looks like fall fishing season is near. Bass and Crappie fishing has went from fair to good, but the best it still ahead. The Reelfoot area has gotten lots of rain in the last few days, and the rise may affect the fishing for a couple more days. After that should be the beginning of prime fishing time.

The lake was just and inch or so below pool level before yesterday's rain, so it should be above pool level now. It has been a few years since we've had water levels this high in early fall and it should make for some good fishing this fall. Here's the rest:

Crappie-Crappie has gone from fair to good, and should get better. Anglers have been doing well in the 12-13 foot range with minnows in the Lower Blue Basin. Been kind of slow up on the north end. Average size keepers are running between 1/2 and 1 1/4 lb.

Bass-Bass fishing is good. Most, if not all of them, are being caught in shallow water. Try around the mouths of ditches and lily pads. Jackie's favorite bait right now is the 1/4 oz., white spinnerbait with double colorado blades. While it's murky use silver blades. Then switch to gold as the water clears up. Average size fish being caught range from 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 pounds.

Catfish-Catfishing has been good this week. Some nice catches have been had in 3-6 feet of water. Nightcrawlers have been the top bait, but stinkbait should work well also. Try them both until you see which one works best.

Bluegill-A few people are still bringing in a dozen or more at a time, but that's about it. Would be considered slow at best.

 Stripes-Slow.
