reelfoot lake fishing report

Reelfoot Lake Fishing Report for:
September 13th, 2002

Finally starting to see some signs of  fall fishing. The cooler weather in the last couple of days has picked up both the crappie and the catfish, and while they would still be considered just fair, the forecast for cooler weather in the days ahead should see the fishing get better and better.
Lake temperatures have dropped over 10 degrees in the last week and now stand around 78. Lake level is low and getting lower, around 6 inches below pool. So be careful out there. Lots of stumps to hit with it this low, even more than usual. Here's the rest:

Crappie-showing a definite improvement for the first time in a long time, although it should get much better in the weeks ahead. In the last couple of days they have been catching them pretty well, but they are scattered in a variety of depths. Minnows are the top bait.

Catfish-the other species that have benefitted already from the cooler weather. Just like the crappie, they have showed signs of improvement in just the last couple of days. Try in 4-6 feet of water, not any deeper, but maybe shallower. Stinkbait and nightcrawlers are producing well, as is chicken livers. Use a treble hook for the livers.

Bass-bass fishing remains slow, but look for a major improvement in them also.

 Bluegill-very slow.

Stripes-after just a good week or two of stripe fishing in August, they have been slow since.
