reelfoot lake fishing report

Reelfoot Lake Fishing Report for:
September 26th, 2003

Fishing has improved a little this week, but the best should lie in the weeks ahead. Most fish are kind of hit and miss right now, but the cold front coming through this weekend could turn em on in a hurry.

Lake level is an inch or two below pool stage. Water temps are in the upper 70's. Here's the rest:

Crappie-Picked up since last week, but still hit and miss this week. Anglers reported a good day on Tuesday followed by mediocre action on Wednesday and Thursday. The good sign is that there are a lot of shad bunching up, so it shouldn't be long now.

For best results be ready to cover a bunch of different depths until you can find em. They've been caught in anywhere from 6-14 feet of water and sometimes suspended 6 feet deep in 14 foot of water. Minnows are the top bait.

Bass-Like the crappie, they've been hit and miss lately. Top baits are spinnerbaits, spoons, buzzbaits and tubes in pumpkinseed color.

Catfish-Fair, just like the bass and crappie. Top baits are the old stand bys, nightcrawlers and stinkbait. Got some pretty good reports from anglers fishing with chicken livers also.

Bluegill- Slow overall. There are some being caught, but they're averaging a small to medium size. Hair jigs are the top bait.

Stripes (Yellow Bass)- Stripe fishing has been excellent this week. Problem is, pin minnows are the top bait and they've been hard to come by. Check at Bo's Landing to see if they've got any. Small rooster tails or other spinners should work also. Fish them slow about 18" deep.

They're biting best after the sun gets up and the shad are stirring.
