A day that began with light winds and brilliant sunshine ended with cold, drizzle, sleet and a pair of Arkansas fishermen as the champs of the Reelfoot Crappie Masters event. Jimmy Pennington and Charles Carpenter, both of Hamburg, Arkansas brought seven crappie to the scales weighing 11.44 pounds to beat the second place Tennessee team of Roger Wabum of Friendship and Tommy Hogg of Union City who caught 11.22 pounds. The winning team took home two Artic Cat ATVs valued at approximately $12,000 while Wabum and Hogg collected $3,000 cash. More than $20,000 in prizes and money was awarded for the tournament. The Reelfoot Lake Tourism Council was a co-sponsor of the event. The tournament had 120 teams competing up from 117 last year. The big fish was caught by Alvin Perry and Vic Finkley of Grenada, Mississippi and weighed 2.55 pounds. It paid $819. Third place went to Danny Carter of Winsow, Ky., and Kennie Calson of Murray, Ky. with 10.49 pounds. All teams were required to bring their fish alive to the scales and then release them in the Kirby Pocket ditch. Several hundred persons gathered for the weighin with cars being parked all the way out on highway 22 and in a nearby church parking lot.
