Reelfoot Open Bass Tournament

The 2002 Reelfoot Open Bass Tournament was held at Bunch’s Dock in downtown Samburg on June 22-23. The Open, as it has been dubbed by the local anglers, is the one tournament that determines which is the best fishing duo on Reelfoot Lake. This is due to the style tournament of The Open. The Open is fished much like the BASS Megabucks’ 10-hole two-day event.

This year, War Eagle Boats and Mercury Marine sponsored The Open. This duo sponsored the Grand Champion place with a $1,000.00 prize. War Eagle Boats and Mercury Marine was brought to tournament promotion company Cypress Creek Outdoors owned by Dwayne Dunn by Union City Marine. Other local businesses lending their support to the tournament was Jenkins Dodge who donated the beautiful acrylic trophies, Reynolds Bros. donated a case of Citgo motoroil, and The Samburg Motel donated the use of their newly renovated dock and supplied the lodging for the tournament team and fishermen.

The fishing duo of Mike Terry and John Hogg outlasted and outfished at total of 15 teams to claim the Grand Champion place with a stringer of 5 bass that weighed a total of 19.29 pounds. The second place team was that of Clint Wilson and Mike Chandler with the team of Perry Cox and Ronnie Webb rounding the third place position. The defending team of James and Jason Tolley placed fourth this year. Next year the team of Mike Terry and John Hogg will automatically have a place in the top ten teams that get to fish on the second day of The Open.

Something new and innovative that Cypress Creek Outdoors is bringing to the local tournament scene is that of airing the weigh-ins live as they happen. KTMO 106.5 country music radio of Kennett, MO has been on-hand both years to broadcast the weigh-ins live as they happen. Look for another new development next year when Cypress Creek Outdoors and KTMO go on the water to interview the contestants as they fish their respective holes during the final day’s event.
