WILDLIFE COMMISSION CREATES NEW WMA FOR WEST TENNESSEE
courtesy of:  TWRA

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission (TWRC) has established a new Wildlife Management Area (WMA) for West Tennessee.  At their April meeting, held in Nashville on April 26, the TWRC gave its approval to form Presidents Island WMA, located in southwest Shelby County.  The lands and waters of this new WMA are owned by the city of Memphis and Shelby County and will be managed by The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA). The new WMA consists of two units which total over 15,000 acres.

"This area has long been known for the quality of antlered deer it produces," said Alan Peterson, Region I big game biologist. "The big game hunts held on the WMA will be archery only and will be quota hunts.  Hunters will have the opportunity to apply for these hunts on the WMA hunt application, which should be available in June."

Gary Cook, TWRA Region I Manager said, "We will probably schedule three hunts for the 2001 deer season. Two of the hunts will be antlerless only hunts and one will be either sex with some type of restriction on antler size."
