reelfoot lake fishing report

Reelfoot Lake Fishing Report for:
October 24th, 2003

From an angler's perspective it's an ideal time to fish. The weather has been mild, the water temps are in the low 60's, it's mid fall and the bait fish are everywhere. But from the perspective of the fish it must not be so great, because they ain't been biting for the last couple of days. Couldn't ask for a better time to fish, but they've just turned off. Of course that could turn around today, but it just goes to show you how fickle those ole fish can be.

Late October is usually a safe bet for some good fall fishing, and it has been for the most part. Then you get a couple of days like Wednesday and Thursday and all that's out the window. Whether they're reacting to the upcoming front, moon phase, ph or anything else is anybody's guess.

Still, as mentioned it's a good time of year, so get out there when you can. Maybe they'll be hungry by then.

Water temps are at 61 degrees on the main lake and the lake level is holding about 3-4 inches below pool. Here's the rest:

Crappie-Was good early this week. Slow for the last two days, and I mean slow. Had a report from one experienced angler that brought in two yesterday.

The time is right for em and just because they haven't bit the last couple of days doesn't mean they won't today. Jackie recommends trying the deep water (12-14) first right now. If they ain't biting there move in to 6-9 feet of water. If they ain't there move in shallower. They could be in a transition stage right now so the right depth may be hard to find.

There have been some reports from anglers catching a few in the channels on black and chartreuse jigs. Might give that a try if the main lake isn't producing.

Bass-Slow. That's about all there is to it.

Catfish-Slow. One angler ran 70 yo yos a couple of days ago without catching one.

Bluegill- Slow. Unlike the others that could rebound, they're probably done for the year.

   Stripes-Slow.
