reelfoot lake fishing report

Reelfoot Lake Fishing Report for:
May 9th, 2003

First, we'd like to apologize for listing last week's report as March 2nd instead of May 2nd. Webmaster got a little excited and mixed up his months.

Fishing remains good for almost all species except yellow bass. Bluegill are moving towards crickets as the preferred bait. Crappie are being caught shallow and in mid-depths. Bass anglers are doing well also..

Storms have been frequent in recent days. The area has seen hail, tornados and lots of rain since Sunday. The rains have raised the lake level considerably and it is now about 1 foot above pool stage. The main lake is still pretty clear, but the north end is now stained to muddy depending on the area. Water temps are 74-75 in the shallows and near 70 in deeper water. Here's the rest:

Crappie-Crappie fishing remains excellent between the storms. Jackie brought in 30 nice keepers before the storms ran him off at 10:30 and says it's still a great time for crappie on Reelfoot. Catches are being had in shallow and mid-range depths from 2-10 feet. Minnows work well in the deeper range. Jigs are also producing in the shallows.

Bass-Bass fishing remains good. Jackie chased them Thursday afternoon and brought in 5 nice keepers on a chartreuse/white spinnerbait and a black/blue jig and pig. For the pig portion he prefers a plastic crawdad trailer. Try the usual areas (trees, stumps, lily pads) and focus on depths no greater than 6-7 feet. Shad colored jerkbaits such as a bang-o-lure should work well in the shallows. Try the jig/pig or a plastic worm in the deeper areas.

Catfish-Catfishing is good, as it probably will be for the rest of the year. Ranges from 3-7 feet are good areas. Nightcrawlers and stinkbait should both produce well.

Bluegill-Bluegill fishing is good/excellent. They're starting to respond better to crickets and that's what Jackie now recommends using. Try fishing the cricket under a very small slip bobber. Use a bb sized split shot about 6 inches up from the hook. Small feather jigs should also produce some fish.

Stripes (yellow bass)- A few here and there. Just too early for em.
