Reelfoot Lake Fishing Report for: In Jackie's own words, "It's On!". He brought in his biggest stringer of crappie this year on Tuesday. Over 70 fish that consisted of 40 over 1 1/4 lbs. and 8-10 2+ pounders. That's Reelfoot crappie fishing at it's best. Caught them on minnows in 6-8 foot of water. He said that he'd been chasing them since 7:30 a.m. and wasn't doing much. Then around 10:30 they turned on big time. Other good reports came in from the bluegill and catfishing scene. Bluegill fishing has really picked up and catches of 100+ are pretty common. Lake level is holding at pool stage. Main lake water temps were at 68 on Wednesday. Shallow water temps were around 71. Here's the rest: Crappie-As mentioned, it's excellent. They might not bite all day, but when they do it'll make up for it. Crappie are being caught in depths of 10' and shallower. Got some good reports from anglers jigging around the trees this week also. If you're fishing water over 3 1/2 feet Jackie recommends minnows. If you're shallower than that try 1/16th oz. jigs with black/chartreuse, pink/chartreuse or solid chartreuse. Jackie is partial to the black/chartreuse, but he also said don't be afraid to try an off the wall color that they've never seen before. Bass-Bass fishing is good. Not getting many reports of big ole bass, but 3-3 1/2 pounders are being brought in. Try 1/4 oz. white/chartreuse spinnerbaits for good numbers of fish. For larger fish Jackie likes to fish texas rigged lizards. If you can find them, black lizards with yellow spots are a particularly good color. Catfish-Catfishing is getting better and better. Just the cats brought in from crappie and bluegill fishermen is enough to make most people happy. But if you're strictly after catfish, try some nightcrawlers or stinkbait. Fish water 6' or shallower. Bluegill-Bluegill fishing has really picked up and would be considered excellent already. More than just a few anglers have reported catches of 100+ this week. Waxworms have produced well, but crickets are also starting to produce as the water warms. For fishing waxworms, get a long shank #6 or #8 hook (bream hook) and just slide a couple of waxworms on there. Stripes (yellow bass)- A few here and there. Just too early for em. Drum-Not many drum anglers out there. But, if you're interested in some fun action, the drum are biting well. Try fishing minnows right on the bottom. I mean right on the bottom. Liable to catch a few cats and crappie to boot. On one last note: Jackie would just like to say thanks to all his clients and readers of this fishing report. He really enjoys being a guide and has really enjoyed meeting all the folks over the years. In his words, "Just let them know I appreciate them". This man loves his job. One drawback of his busy schedule is the fact that he doesn't have time to return all the calls he receives. Maybe we'll get him on the internet and get him an email address one of these days, but I doubt it.
