Reelfoot Lake Report for:
May 31st, 2002

The water has warmed up and the fishing has too. After the record cold temperatures last week, the water temp at Reelfoot hit a low of 61 degrees this past weekend. It's now up to 74 and rising.
Crappie are starting to get through their post spawn slow spell, bluegill are back like gangbusters and catfish are biting well again.
The lake level is holding steady at around a foot over pool level. Here's the rest:

Bluegill- The bluegill fishing has really rebounded since last week. Barring another record cold front, they should be biting well over the next month. Crickets are the top bait and the top areas are Brewer Bar, Allen Opening, and Upper Blue Basin. Shouldn't even list these as top areas, because there are good catches in every area of the lake, these have just been noted by some successful fishermen lately.

Crappie- It seems like the crappie have shown considerable improvement this week. While it still isn't great, it's showing consistent signs of getting better and should be even better in the week ahead. Minnows are the top bait. Try in 8+ feeet of water in the upper and lower basins.

Bass- Bass fishing is fair. Though males have made up the majority of the catches over the last few weeks, there are some females starting to be caught again this past week. Try fishing in the flat top bonnets with rex spoons or buzzbaits or fishing in the trees with a Strike King 4S Firetiger crankbait or white spinnerbait. The pin minnows are spawning up in the trees and there are some bass chasing em, not a lot, but some.

Catfish- Catfish have gotten back on a good bite again. Just like last week-try tightlining stinkbait in the ditches or fishing a nightcrawler under a bobber (about 18") around the trees. There have also been some catches on crickets and chicken livers. One report was of a fisherman having good success with crickets on a trot line. Not the normal method, but it worked.

Yellow Bass- After getting a few reports in the last week or two, the stripes have shut down. It's still a little early and not hot enough for em.
