reelfoot lake fishing report

Reelfoot Lake Fishing Report for:
March 7th, 2003

Looks like it's about time for some great Crappie fishing on Reelfoot Lake. Jackie made it Thursday morning and brought in 40 keepers in about 5 hours. After freezing temperatures a little flurry of snow that morning, that's not too bad. He called the fishing just fair, but we should see some great Crappie catching opportunities in the days ahead. The weatherman is predicting temperatures in the upper 60's Friday and Saturday with highs in the low 60's Sunday and Monday, FINALLY! If he's right and if the wind doesn't blow too hard, it should be time to catch em.

Lake levels are about a foot above pool. They have closed the gates, so it should drop slowly for the next week or two until it reaches pool level. The water on the main lake is stained and the shallow water is still pretty muddy. Temperatures out on the main lake are 39 degrees. Here's the rest:

Crappie-Crappie fishing was fair Thursday, but should show a dramatic increase in the next few days. The Crappie have moved back a little deeper and anglers were having success in the 14+ foot range on Thursday. As the water level stabilizes and the warm weather kicks in they could move shallower, so keep that in mind.

We mentioned in our update last Saturday that we would go into detail on the specific setup that Jackie uses for catching Crappie. For that information...click here.

Also, if you want to get fired up about fishing, make sure and check out some of...these fishing pictures from Bluebank Resort.

Bass-While the shallower water should be a little warmer, it's just too muddy and still not warm enough. Keep a close eye on them in the next week or two. Bass hate cold muddy water. But, they might turn on in a hurry as it clears up and warms up.

Catfish-Some folks have been catching a few in the 5-6 foot depths. Most of them are running small right now, as the larger fish are still pretty dormant in this cold water.

Bluegill and Yellow Bass- No reports.
