Reelfoot Lake Report for:
March 7th, 2002

We would like to welcome Jackie Van Cleave as our new Fishing Report provider. Jackie has been fishing this area for many years and should provide some valuable information to visitors and locals alike on the top methods for fishing Reelfoot Lake.

By the same token, we would like to thank Jeremy Seals for all his hard work and the  great information he has provided through our first year here on Reelfoot.com. Jeremy will still be guiding on Reelfoot on a part time basis.

For booking either one of these men as your guide, please call: Jackie Van Cleave at Blue Bank Resort 1-877-258-3226 or Jeremy Seals at 731-253-2604.

 On to the fishing report:

The current lake level is 1 foot above pool stage and the water temperature is 40 degrees.

Crappie Fishing has been good if you can get out there. High winds have still dominated the fishing conditions as of late and the prime areas are very susceptible to wind. The top areas are in deeper water (12 feet or so) and the top bait is minnows. Other baits that are producing are jigs in blue/white and in pink/chartreuse. Never heard of the pink/chartreuse, but that's what they caught em on.

There are also some fish being caught in 6-8 feet of water in the upper blue basin area. A tournament last week was won by a team fishing the upper blue basin and they brought in a 10 fish limit that weighed 15.90 pounds. That's an average size of 1.6 lbs. per fish! Not bad for a days fishing.

Bass fishing is good also and the shallow areas where they are hiding provide a chance to get out of the wind. Top baits include spinnerbaits in white/chartreuse, jigs and plastic worms. Jackie prefers a 3/8 oz. Strike King spinnerbait with silver willow leaf blades.

Jackie says that you can catch fish on just about any type of cover at this time of year. Look for the murkier water for best results, or fish the clear shallow water on overcast days. Most of the best fishing has been in the shallow water (around 3 foot deep).

One of the top areas is the arm of the upper blue basin. The water warms quicker up there and sometimes all it takes is a couple of degrees in water temperature to make a big difference.

There aren't any reports on catfish, stripes and bluegill at this time.
