Reelfoot Lake Report for:
March 15th, 2002

Get ready, because the fishing at Reelfoot is just starting to heat up. High winds have kept many fishermen off the deep water Crappie spots, but the bass fishermen are starting to bring in some good size fish and a bunch of em. The lake level is holding at 1 foot above pool and water temperatures have risen to the 53 degree range.

Jackie stressed that the bass fishing in particular is ready to bust loose. Look for 4-5 nights in a row of lows in the 50's and it should be prime time. Get there if you can.

 Here's the rest:
Crappie- fishing is good to excellent and they are starting to move a little shallower (8-10 feet). Top areas are on the deeper parts of the main lake (if you can get out there) and the upper blue basin in front of Gray's Camp.

Minnows are the top bait, but some fish are also being caught on tube jigs in red/chartreuse. Some anglers are having luck by tipping a jig with a waxworm or minnow.

Bass- The females are starting to move in shallow and mark their territory. Reports of some 7+ pounders are coming in and in the next week or two it should be at it's peak. Don't forget to look for about 4-5 nights in a row of temps in the 50's. That should get em in there.

This time of year, the top bait is a white and/or chartreuse spinnerbait. Just slow roll it about 6 inches under  the water. Other baits that work well are the Bang O Lure and a 3/8 oz. jig (crawdad or blk/blue). Focus on stumps and logs in the shallow areas.

Bluegill- they've been wearing out the bluegill in the last couple of days, but any cold weather could turn em off in a hurry. One of the top areas is in the channel south of Gray's Camp.

Top bait is waxworms. Fish right on the bottom in 4-5 feet of water. Use a slip bobber and a couple of bb size weights for good results.

Yellow Bass- starting to catch a few mixed in with the bluegill. Just use the same methods as mentioned above.

Catfish- No Reports Yet.
