Reelfoot Lake Fishing Report for: Bluegill and catfishing are leading the way this week with bass not far behind. It's time to get out there before the dog days of summer kick in. The weather is really heating up, so make sure and take that sunscreen if you're heading out on the lake. Here's the rest: Bluegill-Bluegill fishing is excellent if you can get on them. Jackie says they're still on the beds and locating the beds is the trick. There are beds all around the lake, but outside the bonnets is not a bad place to start looking. Use a slip bobber that you can cast for locating them. It allows you to cover a larger area than vertical fishing. Once you find them you've got it made. Just stick with em. Jackie and a client brought in a cooler full by 1:00 one day this week. He said the average size was great. A lot of double and triple humpers, as he calls them. That's the big ones with the humps on their forehead. Never heard that one myself. He said you true bluegillers will know what he's talking about. One thing he would like to remind anglers of: If you catch a big female filled with eggs, let her go. There are plenty of more to be had and those big females insure a bright bluegilling future. Her and her little uns will probably be on that spot next year. Crickets are the top bait. Crappie-The crappie have slowed drastically. The warmer weather has slowed down their feeding, or at least something has. If you've got to try em, hit the shoreline early with some jigs and then head out to 10+ feet of water and try some minnows. Bass-Bass fishing is pretty good. They're catching them shallow in a variety of cover (bonnets, pads, shorelines) and around the deeper logs later in the day. Buzzbaits, spoons, spinnerbaits and shallow crankbaits are all working well. Jackie noted that a variety of baits will work. The best bet is to usually try what you have confidence in. Then if that doesn't work, try these we've mentioned or try something they've never seen before. Remember, this is fishing. It ain't an exact science. All of this stuff is just what's been working for the anglers that we've talked to. There are plenty of folks catching fish on other baits that we don't talk to. Here's an article...on a big bass caught earlier this week and how it was caught. Catfish-Catfishing remains excellent. Good catches are being had anywhere from 2-7 foot. Nightcrawlers, cutbait and stinkbait are all producing some good stringers, just use what you've got confidence in. Stripes (yellow bass)- Slow.
