reelfoot lake fishing report

Reelfoot Lake Fishing Report for:
July 4th, 2003

It's heating up around here, but there is still some good fishing to be had. The cooler weather this year has kept the bluegill spawning for longer than usual. Won't last much longer (week or two), so get out there while they're still biting. Catfishing is hitting full stride and should continue on through the summer.

Water temps are up and are now around 82 degrees. Lake level is holding a couple of inches below pool, or somewhere around there. Here's the rest:

Bluegill-The bluegill fishing keeps holding on. As mentioned, it might not  last much longer. But, it's been good this week. Jackie has brought in a cooler full by mid day all week long. He's been catching them in 3-6 feet of water on crickets. He recommended tri-bar and allen basin as good areas.

Just like last week, you might have to cover some area before you find em. There are still plenty on the beds and once you find the beds you've got it made. Try around the trees, outside the trees and about anywhere else til you locate some.

Crappie-It remains slow. They are catching a few nice ones here and there, but you've got to cover some water. A man brought in a 2 lber. yesterday at Bluebank Resort. So, if you've got some time you can bring in some. Just don't expect them in a hurry. You've got to work for these tasty rascals.

Bass-It's been slow for bass fisherman this week. Still could probably bring in some nice ones if you worked at it. Jackie stressed that when they're slow you need to work your bait slow. Try a pop-r or other topwater worked slow around the trees in the early morning. Once the sun is up try a plastic worm or lizard out in the flat top bonnets. Work it slow also.

Catfish-Remains excellent with no end in sight. Folks have really been hammering them on yo-yo's. Rod and reel anglers have been bringing in a bunch too. Jackie has been watching anglers catching them on cut shad and nightcrawlers, right out from Bluebank Resort. Focus on 10 foot of water or shallower.

Stripes (yellow bass)- No reports. Should pick up soon.
