FISHING / HUNTING LICENSE EXPIRE

Sportsmen across Tennessee have an important deadline that’s fast approaching. It’s the expiration of fishing and hunting licenses and it occurs every year on the last day of February.

Have you remembered to stop by your local license agent and update yourself this week? It’s easy to overlook the annual deadline when gloomy days of winter linger and you’ve been cooped up inside for weeks with cabin fever.

All of a sudden a few days of sunshine arrive and you can’t wait to head toward the lake on the maiden voyage of the fishing season. The fish are calling.

After searching high and low for all the tackle and going through a check list while on the run, you head toward the boat ramp thinking more about whether the motor will start or the depth finder will work.

There’s always something not working right on the boat, motor and trailer on the first trip of the year. Maybe a dead battery or broken wire on the electronics. Stubborn steering or a moody trolling motor. The list never ends.

In the hustle and bustle of it all you get to the lake and finally make it out there before the reality of the moment hits and you ask yourself: have my fishing licenses expired?

A quick check of the billfold and that empty feeling takes over the thrill of being when you discover your new fishing trip is at the mercy of old licenses. Then you ask yourself why you waited until the last minute, knowing full well the annual expiration date is late February.

So don’t make that mistake this year. Make sure to update yourself this weekend before you get back out on the lake and get caught up in the moment, only to look over your shoulder and see the wildlife officer’s boat slowly approaching you and that hollow feeling creeps up your spine.

All licenses are the same price as last year so that’s good news to most sportsmen. If you have your old license with you the agent can plug in your number to the TWRA computer’s data base and it will spit out your new tags quickly and you’re on your way.

This year’s tags have an orange border to them and the color coding helps you distinguish one year from another.

Licenses are also available online but expect to pay a service fee if you go that route. You can charge them to a credit card if you’d like. For online purchases go to  www.tnwildlife.org

Spring is coming but winter is still here. Just don’t let spring fever get hold of you before you remember to renew your fishing and hunting licenses. It sure makes the day go better knowing you’re legal, even when the boat doesn’t run right or the fish don’t bite!

The 2010 Tennessee Fishing Regulations, which take effect March 1, are being distributed to license agents across the state The Regulations can be picked up at all TWRA Regional Offices and anywhere hunting and fishing licenses are sold. It will also be available soon at www.tnwildlife.org.

The regulations for 2010 are printed in a color magazine format with larger print for easier reading. The regulations contain helpful sections that cover everything from hook, line and sinker, fish identification, State record fish, phone numbers to obtain the latest water release schedules for TVA and Corps of Engineers dams in Tennessee, and much more.
