reelfoot lake fishing report

Reelfoot Lake Fishing Report for:
February 7th, 2003

After the cold and the wind it's finally time to get back to some fishing. The lake had been frozen  up until this past weekend and anglers have had little opportunity to chase some fish. It's thawed now and the crappie are biting.

Jackie made it out yesterday for a couple of hours Wednesday and brought in 20+ keeper crappie in the 1/2 lb. to 1 1/2 lb. range. Reports from other anglers are the same...good.

The lake is still very cold with surface temps in the 37 degree range. So, fish deep. Try fishing in 15-16 feet of water and fish just off the bottom a foot or two. Minnows are the top bait.

The crappie are really schooled up this time of year, so if you find em, stick with em. Where there's one, there's bound to be more.

One other tip: Don't worry about getting out there too early right now. Let it warm up a little and hit it around 8:00 or so. Anglers have reported that they're biting good all day, but once it warms up the fishing should be better.

We also got a good report from a local catfisherman. He brought in a good load of cats from 4-6 feet of water on nightcrawlers yesterday. February isn't known as a catfishing month, but that doesn't mean you can't catch a mess of em.

The forecast calls for some more temperatures in the teens on Friday. Hopefully after that we'll see some better fishing temperatures, at least better for the fishermen.
