reelfoot lake fishing report

Reelfoot Lake Fishing Report for:
February 28th, 2003

**UPDATE (3-1-03): We made it out fishing with Jackie on Friday, Feb. 28th and this fishing report was right on the money. Jackie hadn't made it out lately, but said the Crappie should be biting if the weather would let you out there. Make sure and read about our fishing trip...here

We commented last week that the cold weather hadn't kept anglers from catching some fish. Well, the snow and freezing rain finally slowed them down. Even with cabin fever ripping at fishermen's souls, the weather has been too bad for anybody to fish lately. Jackie did get a report today from an angler catching his thirty Crappie limit in fourteen feet of water. Besides that, there just isn't much to report.

Lake levels are holding a foot over pool stage. Don't have official water temps this week, but should be right around 40.

Weather forecasters have predicted weather in the 40's for the next four or five days, a virtual heat wave. This should help and if the wind lays you might want to give it a try. If we can see a few days of 50's in a row it should make a big difference.

Next week we should have a lot more information to go on. Remember, spring's right around the corner, or maybe the next corner. Here's the skinny:

Crappie- If any fishing could be considered good, it's Crappie. The only problem is that there aren't even many Crappie reports right now. Still, it's a pretty safe bet that the Crappie fishing should be good. Try 11+ feet of water and fish a foot or two off the bottom. Might even try it shallower, but in the same depth water. Minnows are the top bait, especially under these conditions.

Bass- Ain't nobody fishin for em yet. But, shouldn't  be too long.

Catfish- Ain't heard nothing bout them either.

   Bluegill- Too early.

Stripes (yellow bass)- After last summer, we ain't sure there are any even out there.

Snakes/Turtles- Too cold for them too.

Sailfish- Might have as good a chance as you would on some of these others. Best times are when it's cold and snowing on Reelfoot. Best area is about 500 miles south of here (give or take a few hundred miles). Might even see some sunshine down there. If you do, take a picture and email it to stircrazyfisherman@freezingintennessee.com. We haven't seen any of that sunshine stuff round here in a long time.
