TENNESSEE HAS NEW ARCHERY SEASON FOR WILD TURKEYS
(From Fall 2001)

Increases in wild turkey populations have given rise to the expansion of hunting opportunities for wild turkeys in Tennessee.

This year, there is a new archery-only fall season which will be open during the first segment of the archery-only deer season, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA).

Only those counties that have the fall quota gun season will be open to this new season.  Across the state, there are 35 counties with fall turkey hunting.

In West Tennessee, the following five counties have the quota gun season and will be open to archery hunting for wild turkeys from September 22 through November 2, 2001: Hardeman, Hardin, Humphreys, McNairy and Stewart.

During this new season, only archery equipment legal for big game hunting can be used.  The bag limit is one wild turkey of either-sex.

Any turkey harvested must be tagged with the temporary harvest tag and taken to a big game checking station where a permanent tag is completed.

Turkeys harvested during the archery season do not affect the bag limits for the fall quota turkey hunt or the spring turkey season.
