While wood ducks have been scarce for many early season hunters over the past few years, Reelfoot once again offered excellent hunting. Reelfoot provides ideal habitat for wood ducks and it was evident over the last few weeks that there were plenty around. It didn't disappoint. Guide Billy Blakely of Blue Bank Resort brought home limits of woodies on every day of the 5 day season, while guide Jackie Van Cleave did the same on the 3 days he was able to make it. Of course these aren't the only ones who had success on Reelfoot, many others did also, but some areas didn't fare so well. Reports from the Mississippi River bottoms and the Kentucky Lake area were of few birds being harvested. The season is known as the Wood Duck/Teal season, but woodies made up the majority of the bags last week, as they usually do. There were a few groups of teal around, but not many. If you've never taken advantage of the early season on Reelfoot, make plans now for next year. It's a great hunt and those woodies provide some great eating. Many hunters rank the wood duck as the best tasting duck there is. One other reminder: It's time to book those winter waterfowling trips on Reelfoot. The guides will be booking up soon, so get your reservations now. For information on some of the areas top guides...visit this page. |
