Eagle watching is in full swing and while it's not a record year, there are plenty of eagles in the area. David Haggard of the Reelfoot Lake State Park made a rough estimate of 125 eagles at the present time. On recent eagle watching trips they have averaged seeing between 20 and 40 eagles. Not too bad for such a mild winter. Right now the greatest number of eagles can be viewed in the Black Bayou/Phillipy area on the west side of the lake. They are chasing the waterfowl. So, go to where the ducks are. They are also being found even farther west near the Mississippi River. Since the commercial crappie fishing stopped on Reelfoot a few years back, the eagles have changed their feeding habits. The fish they used to feed on have been replaced by waterfowl. This means that they don't necessarily stay on the lake unless the ducks are there. With duck season closed and with the abundance of water available in the fields, the ducks are in the fields. So, the eagles are around the fields. Most of their feeding activity occurs in the mornings and David said prime viewing times are between 8:00-11:00 a.m. It's a great time for eagle watching, so get out there if you can.
