CRAPPIEMASTERS TOURNAMENT
(March 6th, 2004)

It came as no surprise to anyone who follows crappie tournaments, that local fishermen Ronnie Capps and Steve Coleman brought in the first place stringer in last weekend's Crappiemasters Tournament.

Their winning stringer of 10 fish weighed in at 17.23 pounds, which bested second place by 3.25 pounds. The win was good for a Triton Crappie Boat valued at over $14,000.00. Not bad for a crappie tournament.

These guys are no strangers to winning crappie tournaments. They're three time Crappie Classic winners, and have won various other tournaments along the way. One of the few places they've never won before was on their home lake of Reelfoot, at least before now.

We had the chance to talk to Ronnie about their successful day and here's what we found out:

Their key to winning was simple: Just catch as many fish as possible and the big ones will be mixed in there somewhere. That's just what they did. By weigh-in time at 3:00 they had landed approximately 120 fish, with the biggest ten fish stringer of the day among those 120.

As early in the year as it is, you would think that deep water might be the key. How's 20 inches deep? That was their top depth, while fishing in only 2 1/2 feet of water.

In fact, many of the top competitors that we talked to focused on 3 foot of water or less.

Ronnie pointed out that he'll find lots of fish shallow on Reelfoot no matter what the season. Even in the winter, there are plenty of shallow fish to be had.

We don't know exactly where they were fishing, but he commented that the deepest water around them was 5 feet deep. Of course that doesn't narrow it down much on Reelfoot.

The baits used were super jigs in white/chartreuse, red/chart and purple/char.

The second place team of Danny Swift and Freeman Swift of Fulton won $1,500.

The third place team from Crockett County, Chris Edwards of Bells and Rob Kail of Alamo, won $1,000 for their catch of 13.88 pounds.

Henry Kuiper of Paducah and Barry Arnett of Eddyville (Ky.) took the big fish with a whopper of a crappie at 2.35 pounds. They won $728.

We'd just like to say congratulations to Ronnie and Steve for a big win. This was one of the biggest crappie tournaments that Reelfoot has ever seen, with 104 boats entered from 11 different states. To win on your home lake against so many competitors makes it even sweeter.

We'd also like to say thanks to all the people at Crappiemasters and Triton Boats for putting on such a great tournament. The payouts were some of the largest we've ever seen for a Crappie Tournament. Here's hoping for many more just like it in the future.
