A pair of Gibson County fishermen won the Crappie Masters Reelfoot Lake tournament Saturday edging out the three-time world champion team of Ronnie Capps and Steve Coleman. Tony Duncan of Rutherford and Randy Allman of Yorkville brought ten crappie to the scales weighing 16.11 pounds to take first place. Capps and Coleman, defending Reelfoot champs and also world champs, came in second with 14.4 pounds. A bright, sunny day brought 117 teams but a stiff north wind made fishing conditions difficult in many areas of the lake. The 117 teams is likely the largest crappie tournament held on Reelfoot. Last year’s event drew 104 teams. The weigh-in was held at Kirby Pocket. The tournament was co-sponsored locally by the Reelfoot Lake Tourism Council. Duncan and Allman won a BassTracker boat completely rigged and valued at about $16,000. Second place paid $2,000 to Capps and Coleman. Third place went to Jeff Cornelius and Mark Williams of Murray, Ky., who caught ten fish weighing 13.96 pounds and won $1,500. The tournament paid the top 15 teams in for a total amount of about $23,000. A slab crappie weighing 2.68 pounds was caught by the local team of Jason Thomas and Joseph Goodlett and paid them $819 for the big fish.
