Getting More For Less

In a time when cutbacks are the norm, Christine Donald of the Reelfoot National Wildlife Refuge continues to provide more and more for the Reelfoot Lake area.

State and national funding are being cut every year, including the closing of Reelfoot State Park facilities on Mondays and Tuesdays. But, that hasn't stopped Christine from adding and improving facilities around the lake.

By finding and securing grants from various sources, she has been able to start new projects each year that help Reelfoot and it's wildlife.

 Recent projects include:
-A new pump just installed in the Long Point refuge that will insure more stable water levels. This should increase the already huge populations of wintering waterfowl in that area, therefore improving hunting opportunities and the economic impact from these hunters.

-Public viewing platforms on the refuges for observing waterfowl and other migratory birds. A viewing station at Lake Isom Refuge is soon to be added and the station at Long Point will be improved to provide handicapped access in the near future.

-Building of wood duck boxes and other bird houses with donated lumber.

-Various food plots and wildlife habitat improvements.

-Hiking trails to be added soon.

These projects benefit everyone that visits or lives around the lake and help to enhance this natural wonderland.

We would just like to say "Thank You" to Christine Donald for making Reelfoot a better place.

If you have any resources that might be of help in furthering her projects please contact Christine Doanld at 731-538-2481.

Also, don't forget about "Public Lands Day" on September 29th. With just a little bit of your time, you can help give back to this land that has given us so much.
