Reelfoot Lake Catfish Tournament
(held July 2002)

The recent catfish tournament held by the Reelfoot Tourism Council saw over 43 fishermen and fisherwomen brave the heat to bring in some huge catches. The winning weight (10 fish) was 35.89 pounds brought in by Edward Handley from Arkansas and W.A. Teeter of Missouri. They earned $1000.00 for their win.

Second Place went to Crystal Morgan and Sue Parrish of Tiptonville with a weight of 31.99 lbs.

Third Place went to Mark Thompkins and Tim Rummel from Indiana with a weight of 30.83 lbs.

The big fish of the day was brought in by Thomas "Pete" Miller and Ryan Jones of Tiptonville weighing in at  6.51 lbs. That fish earned them $120.00.

The second big fish was caught by James E. Parrish of Tiptonville and weighed in at 6.49 lbs.

The tournament was a huge success and the winning weights show what many of the locals already know, that Reelfoot offers excellent catfishing. Actually, catfishing is one of the underutilized species in Reelfoot and since the commercial fishing pressure has declined in recent years the fishermen have benefited. It is not unusual to catch over a hundred pounds a day.

Winners Handley and Teeter, , as well as many of the other competitors, used Sonny's Stinkbait for their bait of choice.

If you think you've got what it takes to bring in old whiskers, give the Tourism Council a call for details on next years event - 1-888-313-8366.
